FEMA Calls Rebuilding Complete As New Orleans Restored To Former Squalor | The Onion – America’s Finest News Source
NEW ORLEANS—After an unprecedented 18-month cleanup and repair effort supervised by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and several state and local government bureaus, Undersecretary for Federal Emergency Management R. David Paulison announced Monday that the city of New Orleans has been successfully returned to its pre–Hurricane Katrina state of decay and deterioration.

This is from The Onion, a hilarious satirical newspaper.

I guess the FEMA may think that they have something to brag about. However, New Orleans will never be the same in my opinion. I don’t think it can be returned to its “former squalor” in such a short amount of time. They may have cleaned up the decay and deterioration, but there is still lots of rebuilding to do and I believe it will take more than 18 months. And for the people that were affected, the “rebuilding” will take even longer as they try to bounce back from such a horrific event.

I read an article that the mayor of New Orleans as well as many of the city’s residents are thrilled that celebrities Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are relocating to the area. They feel that this will bring a greater number of tourists to help revive the economy, an area that FEMA can only aide to an extent. I’m curious as to what people think of this.

Lady,

All good points about New Orleans. In fact, the degree to which the Katrina disaster is due to a huge natural disaster, organizational failure, or personal incompetence would be a great topic for one (or many) posts.

I should have been clearer (I’ll fix the title). This is a satirical newspaper. Satire will sometimes miss the mark or offend some. I think part of the point is that FEMA’s standards are so low that it is not trying to improve NOLA, just return it to how it was. And that is also part of the satire. NOLA, while it has many wonderful qualities, has also been a city of enduring poverty and deep corruption. But our society was content enough to let it be. The tyranny of normalized expectations or something like that.

I don’t know how much of the ‘Brangelina’ story I believe. Yes, their trip to Namibia definitely brough more tourism and put it on the map, but I thought of it more as a coincidence. They wanted to return to Africa, somewhere quiet. New Orleans is quite different.

Fun Fact: Did you know, that the head of FEMA when Katrina first occured (I think there have been changes since) had been an organizer for an Arabian horse show association? Apparently he lost that job because of various inefficiencies. Hrmm… can’t handle horse shows, but can handle a national emergency?
