Superbowl Commercials February 6, 2007

So once again the superbowl is over and once again its not the game thats talked about but the commercials.. Although there was no boob slip from Janet Jackson, there were still some interesting things from the superbowl that made me laugh.. As one my favorite commercials I picked out this Bud Light Commercial: http://www.break.com/SuperBowl2007/bud_light_slap.html

The reason for this is that, commercials lately have been so creative and so eye catching that I feel like companies and marketing departments really dont know what to do to attract more attention to their product in comparison to their rivals’ products. You will understand exactly what I mean once you watch the commercial. The funniest thing about the commercial is it would be absolutely hilarious if it caught on.. Like for example if we just gave a eachother a sweet little slap in the face once we walked in to class hahah.. well anyway, hope you enjoy it.. See you all in class..

I agree the Super Bowl Commercials were hilarious. I read in the WSJ over winter break that some of the companies namely doritos actually held contests for amatuers to create funny and fresh commercials. The winner of the contest had their commercial air on Super Bowl Sunday.

The winner also recieved a montetary prize, but I though that it was interesting that most of the publications felt that the new commericals were really fresh and different because these companies are relying on different sources for the commericals. With the advent of YouTube and other video sharing sites, this has become really popular with lots of companies.

Another example has been in music videos, the alternative band, The Decemberists, had their fans create their latest music video as well. Just some ideas about the ever-changing television marketing ideas.

I thought the commercials this year were funny, but not as good as other years. Personally, my favorite was another Bud Light commercial, the one when they are playing rocks, paper, scissors and the one guy actually throws a rock at the other dude and knocks him out. The Snickers one when the two guys kiss is pretty funny, too. Even though the commercials are definitely entertaining, I feel like they are hyped up way too much and don’t live up to expectations (kind of like the game itself is).

OK, so, does the Snickers ad subtly promote tolerance of gays through humor? Or does it not-so-subtly normalize straights “freaking out” at being perceived as gay?

Do you think the Mars Company checked in with “community” or interest group stakeholders before they went with this one?
